A SURVIVAL GUIDE FOR THE LAID OFF

There is nothing more aggravating in life than to be told in no uncertain terms that one is overqualified directly or indirectly.

We have gone like many others through the gamut of professional headhunters, resume writers, and sending out countless resumes. Only to be offered jobs that are truly unworthy of consideration. Or to be dealt with by HRS personnel that resolve everything by giving profile and efficiency tests to pigeon hole people into a job, a demeaning experience when one is used to being in executive levels internationally.

One can and has gotten "JOBS" doing menial work which will keep one at the poverty line and demean one no end further but pay the bills, and at times one has had no option and no paying job in the end .

It is extremely difficult in this day and age to note that one's experience, one's professionalism is reduced to wondering where one will get money to pay for essentials such as food, clothing, rent/mortgage, or gas for the car and even the most basic utilities. And that is at the stage many now find themselves in, all bills paid for the month with no prospect for income the next even with if fortunate to have a VA HRS counselor looking for jobs for one. One can't even get the simplest of jobs because one is politely told "this is not for you" You are much more qualified.

It is difficult to tell family and friends, one is having a difficult time. And that no matter what one does nothing suitable arises or is offered. One gets bombarded with worthless MLM offers via email and phone which make money for others and leaves one with empty promises and wallets. Worse the onslought of Money transfer scams, lottery winning scams,Found money in accounts, overpaid invoices, seeking relatives for dormant accounts, be our representative collect payments for our overseas clients, etc. Ive heard them all & they are all scams! Or be presented with an onslaught of TV mini commercials on making money at home that in most cases are also worthless. Been there done that.At one's age (64) one can not help but begin to feel like the whole effort is futile.

But one's spirit does not weaken, it fights on to exist another day. One still has hopes and dreams but as the saying goes no matter how good the idea or plan - it takes money to make money and supporters!. And to be frank finances deteriorate the longer one remains unemployed, one can't afford gas for the car or even food. Talk about being at one's wits end. Its difficult for individuals that suddenlty find themselves without a job or steady paycheck.

We recently accepted a position with a new IPO, mostly doing translations of their manuals and software, only to find ourselves with a pink slip when the market went south. It lasted a year, it was a good year but the party is over. High techs, dot.coms have been hard hit!It took over a year to get that job by networking!

We have also gone through the 2 month several interview by a firm, only to be told after being kept waiting for two months that I am Overqualified or best suited for some other work. As always there was no such thing as ageism, but there is!

In 2005 we were approached by a firm to be President of their corporation, after accepting our employment contract and all its terms. One had to resign but months later due to breach of contract, not only was I never paid or reimbursed for my expenses but am owed $99,943.11 based on said contract. Where do I stand in 2006 ? My home was damaged by hurricanes, over $50k worth of repairs were effected. But now Im forced to sell the home due to high property taxes and insurance almost 12K a year! My car was damaged during the hurricanes, never replaced. So now when I must do something I have to rent a car. Im now basically retired on social security and pretty disallusioned.

In truth, We have become pretty good at creating web pages and have a good understanding of the Internet. We promote property via our webpages as we do hold a realtors license but again the market is really bad.

If you have any ideas, suggestions , help or job offers which we could even do via telecommuting, which we have done in the past for corporations. PLEASE let us know!
